So i'm working on stuff for Quake 1 in the Dark Places Mod.

If you guys haven't been paying attention to whats going on with Quake 1, they usually use .md3 formats and the quake3bsp for their levels.

So i'm wanting to get into some quake 3 action action to get my juices flowing.

I know there is radiant, and GTKRadiant, Tempest, Quark and a few other quake 3 level editors. I'm wanting to know which is the best one to use, which one has the least learning curve (i'm not expecting something to be as easy as worldcraft, just not something that will take me 3 years to feel comfortable with).

I can work in Quark fine, i've done a couple of testing in quark this morning and poooped out my texture tests in Dark Places--

thats a quake 3 map, its a cube i know, but I know how to use Quark, but it would take me about 2 weeks to get familiar completely with Quark again, and i really don't like Quark, I can't work very fast in it.

So, i'm not really interested in learning about quake 3's shader techniques, their special unique entities or anything like that at all. I'm a single player guy, so I'm wanting to cook some stuff for quake 1, but make my maps in a quake 3 format.

anyways, i'd like to know what program you guys would recommend, where i should get started with learning the tools, i don't need tutorials on good level design, quake 3 styles or anything, just tutorials on the tools. It would be most fantabulous, and i would prance around in a manthong with a sucker in my mouth to quick responses.

oh yes, i saw a post about this too, but just thought i'd remind you guys. I know i can get files from asci format into a program from 3d studio max for levels, but is there a direct .map exporter for 3dsmax?

GTKRadiant is probably the better tool for Quake III editing. I've been using it for 3+ years, and it was very easy to pick up. There IS *some* reading you may need to do from time to time and need to pick up some keyboard shortcuts and such, but overall that's probably what you're going to want to use to make Quake III maps.

Hey mate,

I use GTK since April, this was the first editor for Q3, which I started to map for first time. Before I used Worldcraft, but that is absolutely different, this way I hated radiant, I couldn't use even its most basic elements. But after a few week, I have to say, that it's the best editor ever! Very easy to use, very mapper friendly, for lazy people it's ideal.
The qeradiant manual is almost perfect for using it, because it's partly updated for gtk's latest version.
I recommend it absolutely!
